Dr Christopher Mole (University of British Columbia, IASH Fellow):The explanation of intelligence

It is often supposed that human intelligence became much easier to explain in the middle of the last century, on account of the sudden advances in our understanding of how material systems can be engineered so as to perform computations.  This supposition is not inaccurate, but more recent results from theoretical computer science suggest that things are rather more complicated than they once seemed.  In this talk I'll explain the importance of those results, as a step towards assessing whether computation does indeed make our intelligence explicable.
