Seeing the Stillness of Works of Art

Modern art historical research often stresses the dynamism of art, whether as objects that change shape and meaning when they move from one place to another, or as objects that played active roles in social and cultural performances. The perceived inertia of artworks–the fact that many of them will sit seemingly unchanged for centuries–often serves as a foil for such studies. This talk will explore a few of the ways in which stillness and perdurance can be understood as crucial elements to the agency of many works of art, with a special emphasis on works from the medieval British Isles and Ireland.
