Azmariwäć (traditional Ethiopian singers), and their Instruments at Ethiopian Imperial Banquets (1855-1974)
This research examines the evolving role of Azmariwäć (traditional Ethiopian singers) and their instruments within the setting of imperial banquets held in Ethiopia from 1855 to 1974. By examining historical documents and archival materials, this study investigates how Azmari traditions and instruments transformed during this period of significant political and social change. The study highlights the manifold role of Azmari, not only as an entertainer but also as an advocate for the underprivileged. Furthermore, it examines the symbolism and significance of various musical instruments used at imperial banquets, providing insights into the cultural and political dynamics of the era. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of Ethiopian music history and the broader social and political context of imperial banquets.
