Dr Amy Blakeway (University of Kent / IASH Fellow): The Rough Wooings and the burghs.
[IASH Work in Progress talk]
The Rough Wooings fought 1543-50 between England and Scotland were the largest Tudor invasion of their northern neighbours. Whilst the political and military aspects of this conflict are well understood, the impact of this invasion, ranging from the experience of living in occupied English territory to living outwith the occupied zone but still facing the constant fear of invasion, has not been explored. Using under-utilised records this paper begins to explore how the war affected life in the towns.
