The Children’s Hearings System 50 Years On: Would Lord Kilbrandon be Proud?

25 October 2018, 09.30 to 16.00, Playfair Library, Old College

The Children’s Hearings System was created as a result of the Kilbrandon Report of 1964 and first appeared in the Social Work (Scotland) Act 1968.  This radical system pioneered a new direction in the way Scotland supports its most vulnerable people by adopting a welfarist approach to care and justice.

Over the 50 years since it started, there have been human rights concerns, legal challenges and major legislative changes to the system, but the fundamental principles of the Kilbrandon ethos still remain firmly at its core.

To mark this important anniversary, the Edinburgh Centre for Private Law has organised a one-day conference on 25th October 2018 that will celebrate, scrutinise and discuss ways in which we can improve our unique Children’s Hearings System.

Conference speakers include: Bruce Adamson (Commissioner for Children and Young People in Scotland), Alison Di Rollo (Solicitor General for Scotland), Sheriff Aisha Anwar and Neil Hunter (Principal Reporter).  The conference will be opened by Maree Todd MSP, Minister for Children and Young People.

Tickets: £50
