This panel discussion explores the roots of gender-based violence around the world – from investigations into sexual exploitation and abuse by UN peacekeepers; to identity, violence and caste in India and UK South-Asian communities; domestic abuse in Scotland; and transphobic responses to the 2009 play The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven in Brazil and the UK.
Panellists:
Dr Rebekah Lee (Goldsmith's, University of London) chairs the panel. Her first book was a generational history of African women in apartheid Cape Town.
Jo Clifford is the first openly trans playwright to have a play running in London’s West End. She has written more than 80 plays.
Nicola Dahrendorf (Birkbeck, University of London) researches sexual and gender-based violence in conflict and post-conflict zones. She has worked for the UN for many years.
Dr Umesh Kumar (Banaras Hindu University) researches popular Hindi and English literary works from India centred on the sociocultural practice of ‘honour killing’.
Dr Nancy Lombard (Glasgow Caledonian University) has been a volunteer, researcher and activist within the violence against women movement for 20 years.
