Housed in a secluded 18th century courtyard overlooking the Meadows, the Institute is adjacent to most centres of University activity such as the University Library and the Schools of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Science.

IASH is within easy walking distance of the National Library of Scotland, the National Archives of Scotland, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the National Museum of Scotland and the National Galleries of Scotland.


The Institute is at 1-5 Hope Park Square, off Meadow Lane and overlooking the Meadows. The main entrance is at 2 Hope Park Square. There is no vehicular access to the Square. 

From Meadow Lane, walk through the short archway/vennel into the Courtyard of Hope Park Square, and IASH is to your right.
From the Meadows, the gate to the square has the code 0131.
If you are arriving by taxi you should ask the driver to bring you to the Russian Orthodox Church, 2 Meadow Lane. On leaving the taxi, walk about 100 yards along Meadow Lane and turn right into Hope Park Square.


From January 2016 until late 2017, vehicle access to Hope Park Square will be restricted. The red blocks on the map below indicate road barriers.

Pedestrian access via the pavement on Meadow Lane is unaffected.

Buccleuch Place lane is closed to traffic and pedestrians. Meadow Lane is pedestrian access only.
