The Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities is founded within the then Faculty of Arts at the University of Edinburgh.
Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Steele: “The reasons for the creation of the Institute are clear enough. In the first place, such an organisation, transcending departmental boundaries, would be the proper and visible culmination of the structure of postgraduate activity which had built up rapidly in recent years. Secondly, Edinburgh having a peculiar wealth of research material in various branches of the humanities, it is fitting that we should not only continuing work on these ourselves… but also provide facilities for scholars from elsewhere who are drawn to Edinburgh by the existence of these materials.”
“Between 1968 and 1980, the major members of IASH’s Committee included: William H. Walsh (Professor of Logic and Metaphysics, 1960-1979); Peter Brand (Professor of Italian, 1966-1988); Reverend William Montgomery Watt (Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies, 1964-1979); Harry B. Acton (Chair of Moral Philosophy, 1964-1974); Anthony Snodgrass, (Lecturer in Classical Archaeology, 1961-1976); Denys Hay (Professor of Medieval and Renaissance History, 1945-80); Nicholas Phillipson (Lecturer in History, 1965-2004); Angus McIntosh (Forbes Professor of English Language, 1948-72); and John Lyons (Professor of General Linguistics, 1964-1976). The variety of subjects and the high level of academic expertise allowed IASH to capitalise on the interdisciplinarity within the Faculty of Arts.”
