The Institute supports six ongoing Research Strands within which a series of themes, projects, and occasional events are organised. These strands are:
  • Theory, Practice and Performance
  • Enlightenment
  • The University and the Wider World
  • The Human and the Environment
  • Digital Humanities
  • Peacebuilding and the Arts

Events range from visiting speaker occasions and day-long events to lunchtime brainstorming sessions on possible collaborations and funding applications. IASH also supports interdisciplinary funded projects including The Science of Man (2002-2006), Scotland's Transatlantic Relations (STAR) (2001- ), Scots at War (1995-1999). Regular input from Edinburgh Research and Innovation will inform participants of appropriate funding possibilities.

Applicants for all categories of Fellowships at the Institute are asked to state how their proposed research would contribute to one or more of the Institute's current strands, and to indicate the member(s) of University of Edinburgh staff contacted in relation to their proposed research topic.
