Dr. Sharon Deane-Cox has been awarded a six months Postdoctoral Fellowship at IASH to work on her project: "Translating Memory: Re-encoding Autobiographical Accounts of Resistance & Collaboration in WWII France".

The research project undertaken by Sharon during her time at IASH will investigate the conceptual and the applied intersections between translation and memory. It will be premised on a comparative case study into French autobiographical accounts of occupation, resistance and deportation during WWII and their English translations. It is also multi-modal in its scope, scrutinizing both written and filmic texts. Nora’s concept of the ‘site of memory’ will be used as an initial prism through which to explore the selected material. On the one hand, the fundamental move from immaterial memory to material site will be conceptualized as an initial act of translation in its own right. On the other, the translations proper will be analysed to identify any modifications in the architecture of source text memory as a consequence of its reconstruction – or retranslation – in a new linguistic and cultural site. Since this study is without precedent, it will further present a new, interdisciplinary methodology for the study of memory translation. Drawing on cognitive psychology research, a quantitative framework for comparison will be established according to the ten phenomenological dimensions of autobiographical memory (Vividness, Coherence, Accessibility, Time Perspective, Sensory Details, Visual Perspective, Emotional Intensity, Sharing, Distancing and Valence). A qualitative study of shifts in the language of experience will be underpinned by Discourse Analysis, thereby allowing the analysis to focus on the broader socio-cultural implications of the target texts as well. Ultimately, this research aims to shed new light on how memory, at once ethereal and substantive, can be understood through and reconstituted in translation.
