European Consortium of Humanities Institutes and Centres Annual Conference 2017: inside/OUT: A European Conference for the Humanities 2017

European Consortium of Humanities Institutes and Centres Annual Conference 2017: inside/OUT: A European Conference for the Humanities 2017

The seventh annual ECHIC Conference took place on 5th-7th April 2017, hosted by the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh, bringing together colleagues from across Europe.

Via the theme of inside/OUT, the gathering aimed to show that humanities disciplines are not passive observers of the social and economic lifeworld, but are themselves transformative and disruptive in productive ways. The Scottish Parliament and the John McIntyre Conference Centre proved splendid settings for the Conference.

The Conference included a plenary presentation by Prof. JP Singh on cultures of diplomacy and negotiation, Prof. Mireille Rosello's plenary lecture on vulnerable communities, a session on the Dangerous Women Project, panel paper presentations, lightning talks focussing on interdisciplinarity and the value of the Humanities, and a roundtable reflection on Brexit, Trump and the challenges of populism and authoritarianism chaired by Alan Little.
