The Institute is very pleased to have been granted one further round of these Fellowships by the Mellon Foundation for the coming academic year.

Applications are invited from Bulgarian, Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Romanian and Slovak scholars under the age of 45 for
Post-Doctoral Fellowships of three months, tenable in the period: June 2011- May 2012.

The Mellon Foundation provides a fixed stipend to cover return travel, accommodation and all living expenses.

No limitation is placed on the area of research within the Humanities and Social Sciences but priority will be given to those whose work falls within the scope of one of the Institute's current Research Themes:

  • Dialogues of Enlightenment: in 2011 this strand will focus on Dialogues with Hume
  • Theory in Practice, Practice in Theory
  • The Academic and the Civic
  • Atmospheres and Atmospherics

The Institute is housed in an 18th century courtyard close to the University Library and about 20 scholars are in residence at any time. Fellows are allocated a private office in the Institute with all the usual research facilities and are expected to play a full part in the activities of the Institute. They are also encouraged to develop their contacts with colleagues within the College of Humanities and Social Science. They give at least one seminar on their current research work during their tenure.

NOTES FOR GUIDANCE:

1. Candidates for Fellowships must have completed their doctorate. Consideration will be given to the academic record and the publications of all applicants and their capacity to disseminate their views among a community of like-minded people. Candidates should give evidence of any contact they have made with researchers at the University of Edinburgh, and of proposed collaboration during their visit to Edinburgh; those who do make such contact before submitting their applications will be at an advantage. Competition for these Fellowships is likely to be strong; preference may be given to applicants who have not previously held a Fellowship outside their own country.

2. The Institute was established in 1970 to promote enquiry of the highest standards in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Inter-departmental and inter-disciplinary study is encouraged. All applications should state clearly the relationship of the proposed scheme of work to one or more of the current Research Themes of the Institute.

3. Fellows are expected to be resident in Edinburgh throughout the tenure of their Fellowship and to play a full part in the activities of the Institute. The Institute will be pleased to help with finding suitable accommodation in Edinburgh.

4. No regular teaching is required but Fellows will give at least one seminar at IASH on their current research work.

5. The Institute is close to the University Library and within easy reach of the National Library of Scotland, the Central City Library, the National Galleries and Museums, the Library of the Society of Antiquaries in Scotland, the library of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and the National Archives of Scotland. Access to both the extensive archival and online resources of all of these collections can be arranged for Fellows as appropriate.

6. Only fully completed applications will be considered. It is the responsibility of each applicant to ensure that all documentation is complete, and that referees submit their reports to the Institute by the closing date. Applications may include a copy of any one article or publication that is thought to be specially relevant to the research proposal and Fellowship submission.
