Esther Wohlgemut is an Associate Professor of English Literature at the University of Prince Edward Island. She has been awarded a six-month Visiting Research Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities. My research project at IASH is part of a larger investigation into the representation of secret societies in late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century British writing. I’m working on the Romantic conspiracy narrative and its connection to the larger cultural debate over the question of human agency in late eighteenth-century Scotland. In particular, I’m looking at how conspiracy narratives such as John Robison’s Proofs of a Conspiracy are informed by and respond to Enlightenment philosophies of action such as those of David Hume and Thomas Reid.
