Strathern (DBE, BA, PhD, FBA), internationally
renowned author
and anthropologist, will lead a discussion on:
The Value of 'Useless Knowledge'
In defending the value of 'useless
knowledge', Professor Strathern will speak not just as an
anthropologist but as an educationalist.

Professor Marilyn Strathern is
The Mistress of Girton College, Cambridge and was William Wyse
Professor of Sociology Anthropology in the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology
at the University
of Cambridge until 2008. She is the author of many widely acclaimed books, the
latest being
"Kinship, law and the unexpected: Relatives are often a surprise"
(Cambridge University Press, 2005).
She was created DBE in 2001.
C.H.A.T.
is an informal occasional discussion group dedicated to exploring the interface
between humanities, arts, and sciences in the 21st century. Each session begins
with a
brief introduction before inviting questions and open debate.
CHAT sessions are free, open to all, and committed to promoting public engagements
with the role of the humanities in the 21st Century.
CHAT is supported by the Edinburgh University Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities.
